Behn Meyer is a global supplier of specialty chemicals, operating across 14 countries with 28 offices, 38 warehouses, and manufacturing plants in Asia, Europe, and the USA. As one of the largest chemical manufacturers in the world, Behn Meyer prioritizes quality, health, safety, security, and environmental (QHSSE) protocols in their operations.
QHSSE
To ensure quality, Behn Meyer has implemented IoT (Internet of Things) to monitor the manufacturing process, including temperature, pressure, chemical composition, mixing time, and pH value. All data must be recorded and analyzed to ensure consistent product quality, optimize processes and troubleshoot any production issues. Process automation has also been heavily implemented to improve production yields with fewer human errors. Automation ultimately improves pre-shipment QC and QA passing rates.
Cloud-based ERP in manufacturing tremendously helps to keep an eye on the supply chain and logistics of chemical products. The ERP system tracks the movement of raw materials, semi-finished goods, and finished products, ensuring timely despatch and preventing stock-outs. As Behn Meyer imports raw materials from different countries and distributes finished products to customers worldwide, efficient supply chain management is critical to their operations. Critical cloud-based business software like ERP systems streamlines production planning and procurement while ensuring audit compliance traceability.
In the chemical industry, working at height and dealing with hazardous materials is inevitable. Behn Meyer ensures the health of the workers by using collaborative robots, such as robotic arms, to perform repetitive tasks or handle hazardous materials. Imaging technology and CCTV help supervisors remotely monitor warehouse activity and waste chemicals discharge, especially at night. As a strong player in the chemical industry, Behn Meyer must ensure zero accidents and 100% environmental DOSH compliance by strictly adhering to QHSSE protocols.
However, digitalization comes with tremendous challenges for Behn Meyer. Like most domestic animal farm and plantation industries, manufacturing plants are located in remote areas to comply with clean air and water discharge. Internet connectivity is not fully covered in the regions. Hence Behn Meyer had to rely heavily on satellite VSAT where the costs are expensive, and there is high latency. To address this challenge, Behn Meyer Malaysia engaged with neutral carrier LNS to implement the LNS Virtual Metro-E, powered by LNS Next Gen SD-WAN.
LNS Virtual Metro E is a technology that combines multiple internet lines from different Internet Service Providers (ISPs) into a single pipeline. This technique tremendously increases the internet bandwidth that helps all of Behn Meyer’s offices and manufacturing plants stay connected. Behn Meyer can utilize digital technology and establish a QHSSE management system that guarantees their operations’ safety, health, and environmental sustainability while producing high-quality specialty chemicals, thanks to reliable network infrastructure.
As a trusted partner of Behn Meyer Malaysia for over 13 years, LNS is proud to have contributed to the success of such a significant player in the chemical industry. We are confident that Behn Meyer will continue to drive innovation and excellence in their operations. We look forward to being their partner for many more years to come.
